How To... Week

Work In Progress invite you to join us for How to… Week - 5 daysof taster workshops and insights sessions to showcase how you, like Emilio, can uncover hidden opportunities to explore yourself and your potential.

Emilio’s Story…

As a first-year student Emilio Garcia Padron often "failed to see the point" of what he was learning. He had no sense of what applied value his STEM subjects had in the world, or what value they might add to his future direction. The degree was a thing to get through to get a job coding, or so he assumed. A placement experience made Emilio realise that coding was not his destiny, and he needed to get out of his comfort zone and experience new things.

In this session, Emilio will share how stepping into the Work in Progress Engagement Academy and Fellowship reframed his perspectives about himself and his potential. He’ll tell you about his experiences, challenges, and the lessons learned about himself with and through others during an intense team and business-based project out in the real world. He’ll shed light on some of the valuable tools and mindsets he tried out with Work in Progress, and how he’s taken these approaches and ways of thinking back onto his degree.

He now sees many more ways to apply his knowledge in the world. He also found the courage to step forward as President of Edible Campus; something he hoped for but never thought he would do. His experiments with others in the world beyond campus are enabling him as a leader and learner on campus. Emilio is committed to "experiencing everything Lancaster can offer", especially now he is in his final year, and this includes sharing his story with his peers, so no one misses the hidden value in their university experience.

Emilio is studying Theoretical Physics and Maths, his story could be any Lancaster student’s story - it could be yours, whether you study Creative Writing, Health and Medicine, Geography, or Languages.

"University is possibly the only time we will ever have the freedom to explore such a wide range of tools and opportunities available to us all as students, but on average we’re here for less than four years! So, my advice is, do not just drift through university - seize everything Lancaster has to offer!"
