Students working with robots

On Wednesday, 11th March 2026, we were delighted to welcome a group of 58 students from Lancaster and Morecombe College to Lancaster University for a day immersed in cyber fun and discovery.

The day kicked off with a recruitment talk from Fred Binley, who introduced students to life at Lancaster University, covering our collegiate system, accommodation, and the various entry pathways into degree programs that relate to computing and cyber security. It was a fantastic way for students to get a feel for what studying at Lancaster might be like.

After the introduction, the students split into two groups to take part in two exciting activities throughout the day. One group joined an encryption session led by Dan Fretwell and Jessica Jay, exploring the fascinating world of codes and cryptography. The other group got hands-on with a robotic arm programming session with Dan Fitton and Lynne Blair, putting their problem-solving and programming skills to the test.

Many students were inspired by the encryption masterclass, commenting on how it made them think in new ways about problem-solving and coding. Others were excited by the robotic arm programming, sharing that they hadn’t realised coding could be so interactive and hands-on. It was clear that the activities sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, with students fully engaged in exploring the world of cyber technology.

The weather was beautiful, and many of the students enjoyed lunch outside in some of Lancaster’s lovely green spaces and courtyards.

To finish the day, students took part in a lively quiz, which had everyone laughing and thinking.

We would like to share a huge thank you to all the staff at LMC for helping to organise this visit and to the students for their enthusiasm and engagement. We hope to see many of them again soon!
