Lancaster University hosted professionals from across the nuclear sector for the sixth Cyber Security in the Nuclear Industry in-person training course, delivered in partnership with the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT).

Cyber threats are constantly changing, and new technologies like AI and quantum computing are creating fresh challenges for the nuclear industry. That means people working in the sector need to keep their cyber security skills up to date and be able to demonstrate that they are fully trained. In the industry, this is known as being "Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel", or SQEP for short.

The Cyber Security in the Nuclear Industry course helps participants work towards this. Participants who complete it can go on to take an exam with Pearson to earn a recognised qualification - the WINS Academy Certified Nuclear Security Specialised Professional certificate in cyber security. Successful participants also receive a digital badge, a simple way of showing employers and colleagues that they have met this recognised standard.

Throughout the week, participants explored practical approaches to developing and implementing effective cybersecurity strategies, learned from industry experts and guest speakers, and exchanged experiences with peers from across the sector. A highlight was experiencing Lancaster University's new nuclear operations simulator (LUNOS), the first of its kind in the UK.
