Distinguished Professor Rachel Cooper OBE, a leading figure in the field of design research and policy, passed away on 17 July 2025. Professor Cooper held the esteemed position of Distinguished Professor of Design Management and Policy at Lancaster University. In 2006, she served as founding Director of ImaginationLancaster, a world-leading design research lab, and was appointed Chair Director of the newly established Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). In 2010, Rachel played an integral role in the creation of the LICA Building on the Lancaster University campus, a dedicated space where colleagues could practice contemporary creative disciplines and deliver research and teaching in a uniquely designed, purpose-built space.

Internationally recognised for her pioneering contributions to design for health and wellbeing, sustainable urban development, design against crime, IoT and socially responsible innovation, Professor Cooper was instrumental in shaping the role of design in addressing complex societal challenges. She authored and edited numerous influential publications, including Designing Sustainable Cities and The Handbook of Wellbeing and the Environment, and was the founding editor of The Design Journal, a globally leading source within the design discipline.

Her steadfast leadership extended to numerous major research initiatives and projects bringing about impact and change beyond the borders of the academic institution. She also held high-level national and international advisory roles with organisations, such as the EPSRC, AHRC, UK Foresight, and the Royal College of Art.

Awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to education, Professor Cooper is remembered as a visionary scholar, a generous mentor who always had time for everyone, and a deeply respected colleague. Her enduring legacy continues through her scholarship and leadership, and the many people she inspired and shaped, both personally and professionally. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

In a career replete with awards, accolades and international recognition it’s her down to earth humanity, compassion, insight and good humour that will linger. Her commitment to helping those around her grow and develop through patient nurturing and generosity was instrumental to the success of Imagination and the many academics researchers, PhDs and students who have spread the Imagination family across the world.
