First year art students on a deep dive into skills and techniques

A series of wooden sculptures inhabiting LICA's black-box installation space.

In the first seven weeks of their first year, they have done projects in drawing from the life model, in painting, in digital and video art and they have just finished making life size sculptures from timber.

They have worked with all the studio tutors on these creative projects, and with technicians they have been inducted into lab and workshop practices and learnt to use hand and power tools, machines and audio-visual equipment. In painting, they have covered colour theory and used a range of materials. Equally important, as a diverse group - coming from many parts of the UK and the world - they have started to share their own skills, knowledge, and experience among themselves.

An image of their sculptures can be found above. When finished we exhibited them to the public in our state of the art ‘black box’ installation space. So, in the first seven weeks of their degree they had their first public exhibition. Not a bad way to start university!
