Research Overview

Dr. Blakely's research centres on intellectual property law, technology policy, and intangible cultural heritage through an interdisciplinary lens. She has recently published a monograph, Technology, Intellectual Property Law and Culture: The Tangification of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and her current research involves empirical sociolegal work on copyright and culture in virtual worlds. She formerly directed the Centre for Law and Society and now serves on the Executive Committee for the British and Irish Law, Education, and Technology Association (BILETA).

Dr. Blakely completed her PhD research at University of Glasgow School of Law on Intellectual Property and Intangible Cultural Heritage in Celtic-Derived Countries, under an AHRC fully funded scholarship. She received her JD, cum laude, from University of California Law, SF (IP); LLM from SOAS, University of London (Development and Governance); and ALB, cum laude, from Harvard University (Extension Studies: Psychology and Legal Studies). Her previous professional legal work includes positions with NBC-Universal in Partnerships, Licensing & Digital as well as at the USC Institute for Innovation in Research Development & Technology Transfer.
