Are you looking for a change of pace from your medical degree? Are you keen to take a deeper dive into the areas of healthcare that interest you most? Do you want to leave university with not only your medical degree, but a postgraduate qualification as well?
If so, then intercalation at Lancaster University could be ideal for you.
Intercalating your degree means you’ll spend an additional year of study, gaining a qualification outside of your medical degree.
Lancaster University offers a range of intercalation options at postgraduate level including taught master’s and master’s by research, offering you the chance to gain a highly-valued postgraduate qualification alongside your medical degree.
Taking a year away from your medical degree can provide a change of pace and offer breathing space from your usual studies. Whilst still academically challenging, your additional qualification will give you time away from the broader study of medicine, allowing you instead to specialise and explore an area of interest in greater detail.
Your chosen course might also include longer vacation periods, giving you the opportunity to spend more time engaging in sports, societies and hobbies so you can make the most of your time at Lancaster.
Whilst these are our focal courses for intercalating medical students, there is scope to study a course outside of this offering. If you feel particularly passionate about studying on a course not listed here, then please enquire with us to discuss your options.
You can view our full postgraduate course list here.
It is important to consider the financial implications of an additional year of study including tuition fees and living costs. Different courses charge different tuition fees so ensure you are clear about how much before you apply. The financial support available varies depending on where in the UK you live.
There are NHS bursaries available subject to eligibility. To find out more, please visit the NHS bursary webpage.

"I decided to intercalate as it’s a great way to broaden your skillset and enhance your ability to drive improvements in patient care. As healthcare organisations transition to electronic patient records and healthcare becomes one of the fastest-growing sources of data globally, the ability to harness this information is crucial.
"Because of this, an MSc in Health Data Science provided me with the opportunity to develop industry-leading skills that can be applied to better understand patient needs, evaluate the outcomes of current practices, and address healthcare inequalities - all of which are essential for shaping the future of evidence-based, data-driven, person-centered care."
