This procedure is available to everyone who has completed a formal student casework process.
Further information can be found within the Student Casework Review Procedure.
Once your formal student casework process has been completed, you will be provided, in writing, with a decision and any resulting actions (also referred to as outcome and remedy). This communication will also provide a description of how you can seek a review as well as your deadline for submission.
To be eligible for a review you must have reasons, or grounds. To have grounds you must evidence one or more of the following:
- That compelling materials (evidence) exist that could not reasonably have been previously provided, i.e. there is something additional and there is good reason why it could not have been submitted before.
- That a material irregularity occurred in the process, i.e. the University did not follow the requirements of its published procedure.
- That the decision and/or the agreed actions were unreasonable, i.e. the University’s decision or agreed actions were not something that could have been reached by a reasonable person using the materials and process.
You are not entitled to a review just because you disagree with the University’s decision or actions. Nor is a review a place to raise matters not previously considered. If you have new matters, you should go through the appropriate student casework process.
If your request for a review meets one or more of the grounds it will proceed as per the Student Casework Review Procedure.
To submit an application for a review please complete the form available here. The deadline for applying will be clearly stated in your outcome letter from the previous process. Requests received late without good reason will not be considered.
Requests for alternate application arrangements or additional time can be submitted to studentreviews@lancaster.ac.uk and will be given reasonable consideration in line with other student casework procedures.
The University may need to handle your personal details for the purpose of managing this request for review, including the exchange of your personal details with appropriate people within the University as well as with the appropriate third-party external organisations. If we believe that your request for review may result in a legal claim being made against the University, we will be required to share details of the case with the University’s insurers and legal representatives. This may include your personal and/or special category data (depending on the details of your case). Where we share details of the case with either insurers or legal representatives, this will be done anonymously, where possible. Identifiable personal data will only be shared where it has been deemed pertinent to the case. For example, in the first instance we may simply share that a complaint has been made concerning perceived non-compliance with the Equality Act without sharing personal details connected to the complaint or claim. We will only share personal or special category data where it is required for the University, our insurers and legal representatives to assess and/or defend the legal claim. For further information on how the University uses, shares and protects personal data, including information about your rights over your personal data and the contact details for our Data Protection Officer, please refer to the University’s Student Privacy Notice.
When the internal review procedures have been completed, if the student remains dissatisfied, a complaint can be taken to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) for Higher Education. The application to the OIA must be made within 12 months of the issue of the Completion of Procedures letter. Information about OIA and its processes can be found on their website.
