Our Work

At Lancaster University building communities, respecting diversity, and creating opportunities for people to learn from one another are at the heart of who we are. For 15 years, the Lancaster University Confucius Institute (LUCI) has brought these values to life, building bridges between Lancaster, the North West and China through language, culture, education, research and international collaboration.

Since its establishment, LUCI has grown into a vibrant hub for Chinese language and cultural engagement, reaching thousands of students, staff and members of the wider community every year. Through teaching and learning, public events, school and community outreach, cultural programmes, international partnerships and innovative educational projects, LUCI has created spaces in which people from different backgrounds can meet, learn and connect. Our work has brought Chinese language and culture to audiences across Lancashire and beyond, while creating opportunities for Lancaster students and communities to engage directly with China and its rich cultural heritage.

LUCI's story is one of collaborations: of colleagues, students, schools, cultural organizations, universities and community partners working together to create opportunities for learning and exchange. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making our first 15 years a success. Happy anniversary, LUCI, and may all these wonderful collaborations continue to flourish!

Foundation and Development

Lancaster University is one of the first British universities to engage with China, and our Confucius Institute is a regional and national leader in bridging China and Great Britain.

The Institute first opened its doors on 20th December 2011 as a result of a successful partnership between Lancaster University and South China University of Technology in Guangzhou.

Based in the Roundhouse at Lancaster’s Bailrigg campus, the building was originally designed as a language laboratory. We remain true to the original purpose of the building, acting as a centre for immersion in Chinese language and culture.

The building was renovated in 2016 and now houses a team of academics, teachers and professional services staff; and is a centre for teaching, engagement and research.

We work with students, staff, schools, businesses and local communities, acting as a focal point for China-related activities in Lancaster and the wider Northwest region, from Carlisle in Cumbria to Blackpool on the Fylde coast.
