Chinese Variety Show at Lancaster Grand Theatre

On 27th January 2024, the Lancaster Grand Theatre saw a Chinese New Year variety show, offering attendees a sensory journey through the rich tapestry of Chinese culture. The lineup featured a diverse array of performances, including captivating Chinese dance routines that mesmerized with their elegance. Traditional Chinese instrumentals filled the air with soothing melodies while the dramatic and expressive art form of Kunshan Opera brought centuries-old tales to life on stage, transporting the audience to ancient times.

Chinese New Year Gala in Lancaster City Centre

On 4th February 2024, in the heart of Lancaster city centre adorned with over 600 Chinese lanterns, the streets pulsed with vibrancy as the Chinese New Year celebration unfolded. Chinese calligraphy and crafts featuring Chinese dragon were provided and various performances staged as the city packed with festival goers celebrated the upcoming Year of the Dragon. Children from the LUCI Chinese weekend classes delighted the crowd with their rendition of Chinese songs and a dance, led by Chency Xiao Chen and Yun-Chung Li, while those from Anchorsholme Academy in Blackpool, one of our Confucius Classrooms, wowed spectators with a Chinese song and an eye-catching traditional Mongolian dance performed in Mongolian costumes, led by Joyce Juan Yun. The festivities peaked with the iconic dragon and lion parade. The rhythmic beats of drums reverberated through the streets as performers clad in colourful costumes brought these mythical creatures to life.

Chinese New Year Celebration at the Roundhouse, Lancaster University

On 13th February 2024, a Chinese New Year celebration was also held at the Roundhouse as we marked the Year of the Dragon, commencing with the opening remarks from Professor Andy Schofield, the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, and Professor Jinghan Zeng, LUCI Director. The event featured story sharing from students in our Chinese Friendship Programme, a medley of Chinese New Year songs by students of Chinese studies, Guzheng performance by Wenxin, a student from Lancaster University, and a piece of Mongolian dance by Leo Zhenglang Chen, one of LUCI Chinese teachers based at Hawes Side Academy, Blackpool. The captivating stories from three pairs of students reflected the bonds of friendship and cultural exchange while the Chinese songs medley took centre stage with soaring festive spirits. Karaoke, along with other cultural displays and experience, added to the jubilant atmosphere, creating lasting memories for all who attended.

Tranquil Taichi in Keswick

Meanwhile, in Keswick, a serene Taichi session at the Keswick Museum provided a tranquil contrast to the bustling celebrations in Lancaster. Participants gathered to partake in this ancient martial art, guided by Qimei Li, one of the Chinese teachers from LUCI, who led them through graceful movements and mindful breathing exercises. Against the backdrop of Keswick's picturesque surroundings, attendees found moments of peace and reflection as they embraced the essence of Chinese philosophy and wellness.
