On Tuesday 5 December 2023, Lancaster University Confucius Institute brought sizzle and aroma to students participating in the Lancaster Chinese Friendship Programme with a palatable Chinese Hotpot Tasting Night.

The Lancaster Chinese Friendship Programme is an academic programme where students studying Chinese as part of their degree are paired with a native Chinese speaking student. The pairs help each other to practice language and learn about each other’s cultures whilst forming a friendship. Hot Pot Tasting Night, as a part of the programme, was organised for the students to enjoy together, and explore Chinese food culture.

Held in the Roundhouse kitchen, the hotpot tasting event featured an array of authentic Chinese hotpot ingredients, spices and cooking styles. The students were treated to a diverse selection of broths, including spicy, tomato and herbal varieties, creating a unique sensory experience that showcased the rich culinary heritage of China.

At the same time as watching A Bite of China, a popular documentary on the history and traditions of food, dining and cooking in China, the students indulged in bubbling pots of deliciousness, surrounded by delightful, festive vibes. Many students used chopsticks to eat their food, and for some this was their first time to try that.

As the aroma of various hotpot broths wafted through the air and laughter echoed across the kitchen, the Chinese Hotpot Tasting Night concluded with a unison of Auld Lang Syne in Chinese.

It was an incredibly memorable night, just as the song expressed at the end. Even though the event ended, their friendships and passion for exploring Chinese culture may never end.
