Tuesday 1st February marked the start of the 2022 Lunar New Year Celebrations. The year of the tiger brings strength and courage to the new year.

The Lunar New Year is the biggest festival in Chinese culture; therefore the Confucius Institute hosted, organised and sponsored a variety of events to celebrate.

The Confucius Institute, Lancaster University campus

On Tuesday 1st February, the Confucius Institute hosted Lunar New Year celebrations for all students and staff. There was a student performance of 《月亮代表我的心》; a Tai Chi performance from one of our teachers; arts and crafts activities and more! We also had an array of Chinese snacks which went down a treat.

On the first weekend of Lunar New Year, two Lancaster University graduates, Percy Lee & Josh Leung, organised a variety of events to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Lancaster. The Confucius Institute was one of the sponsors for the events.

The Grand Theatre, Lancaster

On Saturday 5th February, there were a wide range of performances to show both traditional and modern Chinese culture at The Grand Theatre. Performances included traditional dancing by Manchester Chinese Academy of Dance; Kung Fu and Tai Chi demonstrations by East Lancashire Wing Chun; shadow puppetry by 3 Left Feet; music performances and more! We are extremely grateful to Josh and Percy and everybody who played a part in organising and performing at the events.

Lancaster City Centre

On Sunday 6th February, the Confucius Institute ran an arts and crafts stall in Lancaster City Centre. Lots of people enjoyed making lanterns and practicing some calligraphy whilst watching the performances on the stage. The lively spirit of the local people filled up the town centre.

‘Welcome in the Year of the Tiger with Tiger-Inspired Daoyin Movements’ Event

On Tuesday 8th February, Feixia Yu of YuTaiChi came to campus for a special talk and practice session on daoyin movements inspired by the tiger to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The event was very informative and great for beginners who had never tried Daoyin before.

The Confucius Institute would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped organise and host these events, we hope you enjoyed them as much as we did.

We would also like to wish everybody a happy and prosperous new year.

新年快乐!Happy New Year!
