On the afternoon of 27 September, Lancaster University Confucius Institute hosted a series of Chinese cultural activities for students during Welcome Week. The event successfully attracted over 60 participants who immersed themselves in traditional Chinese culture.

The highlight was the dumpling-making session, where students learned the art of creating this traditional Chinese dish from scratch. Under the guidance of instructors from the Confucius Institute, participants mastered the technique of making dumpling wrappers with rolling pins and expertly folding them with various fillings. The session also included an interesting introduction to the cultural significance of dumplings in China, where they are traditionally eaten during Chinese New Year, symbolising wealth and good fortune due to their resemblance to ancient Chinese gold ingots. The hands-on experience sparked lively cultural exchanges as international students drew comparisons to similar dishes from their own cultures, such as Italian ravioli and Polish pierogi.

Alongside the culinary experience, students also enjoyed Chinese paper-cutting art, learning to cut the character “福” (blessing), and tried their hand at making traditional Chinese knot crafts. For those seeking relaxation, a wellbeing session introduced Ba Duan Jin, a set of gentle Qigong exercises designed to promote physical and mental balance.

The event created a warm, inclusive atmosphere that perfectly complemented the Welcome Week spirit. One participating student remarked, "It was such a fun event. I really enjoyed making the dumplings. They were delicious! Learning about the traditions behind when and why Chinese people eat them made the experience truly meaningful."

Through organising such immersive cultural experiences, Lancaster University Confucius Institute continues to strengthen cultural exchange and mutual understanding, offering students valuable opportunities to broaden their international perspectives while enjoying a taste of Chinese tradition.
