Dr Yakubu Salifu
LecturerResearch Overview
My research interest falls under three broad areas;
- Palliative care/managing care at the end of life so that patients and their families will feel supported and live a more dignified life.
- The other areas of interest are providing care in a resource-poor context. This includes the provision of home-based palliative care and how services are delivered to meet the needs and aspirations of patients and their caregivers, particularly access to care (financial, resources, practical, and technical support).
- Lastly, palliative care around health and social policy to include vulnerable people who have challenges in accessing care. This involves how policy and professional interventions address the challenges of patients and families in dealing with long term chronic conditions.
Profile
My research is primarily informed by my professional background as a nurse and an educationist and more specifically in the field of adult health, palliative care, family caregiving, and health policy. I have had the experience of being a Research Associate for the University of Nottingham’s Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) fund project on Respiratory in Nepal. I am the founder of a Non-Governmental Organisation in Ghana known as Prostate Cancer Support Heritage (Pro CaSH) that aims to mobilise practical and technical support for men living with prostate cancer and their significant others. I have previously explored the facilitators of, and barriers to, Tuberculosis treatment adherence. In recent years my research has focused mainly on older adult care, family caregiving and home care, palliative, and end of life care, and masculinity and stigma.
My PhD explored the experiences of men living with advanced prostate cancer and their caregivers and how they navigate their way through home-based care. This was mainly related to family caregiving, caring for someone in a resource-poor context, and the cultural responses to illnesses such as stigma and masculinity. My previous background has been in clinical nursing care, health education and screening specifically for HIV/AIDs, Hepatitis B, and Tuberculosis treatment supporter. I have had experience in nurse leadership governance as well as classroom teaching.
Career Details
I am a registered General Nurse in Ghana and Registered Nurse (Adult) in the UK.
Research Interests
I am particularly interested in research regarding patients, caregivers and health care professionals managing end of life conditions and symptom burden particularly in resource poor-context. I have researched men living with advanced prostate cancer and how they and their family caregivers.
