Together an Active Future

Together an Active Future is a Sport England funded programme that is currently being delivered in Pennine Lancashire. Our team at Lancaster University, led by Professor Carol Holland, has been commissioned to evaluate the pilot project.

The Together an Active Future programme began from the idea that no individual lives in isolation - everyone is connected to a place and its community, each with its own unique structure, relationships and geography.

Sport England wants to understand how local identities and structures can be leveraged to deliver sustainable increases in activity levels. To do this, they set up 12 pilots projects around the country including the one in Lancashire. It’s a new way of working and evaluating the process and results is a critical part of the work.

The evaluation was a 2 year project that began in October 2019, focusing on three areas: Process, Life Course and Quantitative, led by Dr Claire Hardy, Dr Sandra Varey and Dr Theo Bampouras respectively.

This page details the key findings and outputs from the evaluation.

For more information, please contact Professor Carol Holland.

Process

The aim of the 'Process' strand was to carry out a series of process evaluations on the implementation of physical activity programmes and TaAF. These considered the many levels of TaAF and its delivery.

Life Course

This strand combined co-design, action learning, and life course and deliberative methodologies. Through the use of a two-phased interview approach, an in-depth understanding of individuals’ relationships with and attitudes towards physical activity was gained, within the context of their lived experiences.

Quantitative research

This strand aimed to deliver an online database that detailed the results of basic functional ability measurements. To get this data from end-users, we shared videos showing how to complete the physical tests and sent out an online questionnaire.
