i-DID

The innovative Digital Infrastructure Defence (i-DID) focuses on cyber security and cyber threat intelligence for Internet-enabled cyber-physical systems.

Our goal is to develop cyberattack detection and mitigation methods formulated by practical data-driven solutions that collect, analyse and share insightful threat intelligence related to an adversary’s tactics and procedures, system exploits, vulnerability risks and attack propagation. We place strong emphasis on composing algorithmic and system mechanisms that consider both the internal and external state of a digital networked infrastructure by assessing local and Internet-wide measurements in synergy with device and system-level information.

The iDID group addresses pragmatic industrial requirements using applied research methods and operates in close collaboration with the Cyber Threat Lab, the ICS Lab and Energy Lancaster Institute.

ICS Lab

The Industrial Control Systems Lab is a practical, reconfigurable research space hosting real equipment found in common process control environments. But it is not just the Operational Technology present, the Lab is able to emulate a corporate IT infrastructure as well. This enables security research on a range of live systems to explore all forms of cyber security challenges.

i-DID Director

The goal of my research is to design and implement secure and resilient networked systems. Towards this goal, my research philosophy is in designing algorithms and systems with strong theoretical foundations and in providing practical, data-driven implementations that are deployable in the real world. Hence, my approach brings a data, measurement-driven and systems-oriented perspective to the study of security and resilience challenges. My work is largely focused on such challenges in the context of the macroscopic state of the Internet, large-scale networked infrastructures and Internet-enabled cyber-physical systems. Past and recent work was applied to a range of scenarios in the context of the backbone Internet traffic, malware/botnet detection, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI), and vehicular-to-grid networks. Some topics that I currently investigate through the i-DID group activities and projects (https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/security-lancaster/research/idid/) are:

  • Industrial Control Systems security
  • Distributed Renewable Energy Sources (DRES) network security
  • Secure monitoring of EV battery packs
  • Energy theft in modern power grids
  • End-to-End (E2E) cryptosystems for the IIoT

Internet measurements, security and network management:

  • Detection/profiling of large-scale IoT-based botnets
  • Cyber threat intellingence using Internet measurements
  • Programmable security and resilience in large networked environments
