Dr David Cheneler MEng, PhD, CEng, PgCAP, FHEA, MIMechE


Research Overview

David is a chartered mechanical engineer with a research specialism in microengineering. He obtained his PhD and MEng in mechanical engineering from the University of Birmingham. After his PhD he was employed as a research fellow conducting several multidisciplinary research projects in close collaboration with industry. His research interests include, but are not limited to, biomedical technologies, modelling and characterisation of biological and other soft materials and the development of sensing technologies including for nuclear detection. Current research is focussed on the detection of low energy beta particles, in particular tritium, hyperspectral imaging of gamma and neutrons, photo-electronic detection of water pollutants, characterisation of hydrogels and related materials and environmental monitoring.

He has written in excess of 35 publications including chapter contributions to Discrete Element Modelling of Particulate Media, RSC Publishing; Advances in Microfluidics, Intech and Particulate Materials: Synthesis, Characterisation, Processing and Modelling, RSC Publishing and a water industry report: Smart Sensors for Buried Utility Location and Performance Monitoring for UKWIR. He has also presented his work at over 18 international conferences.

He is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Higher Education Agency.
