Martyn Kelly is a freshwater biologist with a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of London and a PhD from the University of Durham, working with Prof Brian Whitton on heavy metal accumulation by aquatic bryophytes. He did post-doctoral research at Durham on stream ecology and on Mediterranean palaeoecology before becoming Senior Lecturer at the University of Jos (Nigeria) between 1989 and 1991.
