Happy Pride Month to all of Furness

Now that Pride 2026 has officially begun, we in Furness are hoping to share information about what's going on this month both in and out of the college.

Events happening to celebrate Pride in and out of Furness:

Within Furness College we've put up Progress Pride Flag bunting. This flag was chosen as it adds chevron stripes to the side to properly represent transgender individuals and marginalized people of colour as part of Pride Month.

On Wednesday 10th June from 2-4pm, we'll be running a crafts event in Trev TV Room where you can not only make your own Rainbow Mosaics but also can make cards for your friends to celebrate them as part of Pride Month and show your support for the people you care for and respect in your life.

As well as this we'll have boards up in the TV room throughout the month - and other public spaces - with cards for you to write up the names of any LGBTQ+ people you want the college to all show some love for, whether they be inspirational historical figures like Alan Turing, or good friends or partners.

Outside of Lancaster University there are of course a slew of Pride events, especially Lancaster Pride 2026 that takes place on June 14th and Blackpool Pride that takes place on June 6th. For a full list as compiled by Pink UK:

What is Pride Month and why is it in June?

This month exists to celebrate and honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising that happened in Manhattan and helped tip the scales for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. This uprising began on the morning of June 28th and so the month of June is forever commemorated as an important milestone in history.

It started off as "Gay Pride Day" and over time grew to become the now international Pride Month that not only recognizes the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history and the lives of others but all commemorates all marginalized groups and those who have been lost to hate crimes.

Love from the Furness JCR

P.S. Good luck with exams everyone
