Changing ‘r’ accents?

Map of Lancashire

Danielle Turton has been awarded funding from the Leverhulme Trust to carry out the project called 'Changing ‘r’ accents? Towards a sociophonological understanding of the mechanisms of sound change'.

The project will take a deeper look at how our pronunciations of certain sounds change through time. Specifically she will look at rhoticity which has been on the decline in many parts of England throughout history. She will focus on rhoticity in speakers' speech in Lancashire, bringing her research to the local area.

The project is looking to start this autumn and will continue for three years.
