Which degree is right for you?

Lancaster Medical School offers two MBChB programmes: our five-year Medicine and Surgery degree, and our six-year Medicine and Surgery with a Gateway Year degree.

Each degree has different requirements, but both follow the same selection process:

  • Meet the academic and non-academic requirements
  • Sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) in the year of your application. Last year's scores can be found here.
  • Attend a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)
  • Complete a fitness to practise assessment

  • Medicine and Surgery

    The standard five-year MBChB Medicine and Surgery degree is designed for students who are academically well-prepared and ready to begin medical training straight away.

  • Medicine and Surgery with a Gateway Year

    The Gateway Year is designed for students who need additional academic preparation before starting year one of the degree. It offers a more accessible route into medicine for those who do not meet the standard grade requirements and who meet specific Widening Participation criteria.

May-September

  • Register for the UCAT and apply for bursaries or access arrangements
  • Book and sit the UCAT test (testing closes late September)
  • Begin preparing your UCAS application

October

  • Submit your UCAS application by 15 October
  • Complete the Initial Applicant Survey (IAS)
  • Gateway Year applicants may be asked to complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF)

October- November

  • Applications are checked for academic eligibility
  • UCAT scores are received and applicants are ranked
  • Contextual information is considered for borderline UCAT scores

December- March

  • Interview invitations are sent in December
  • Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) take place in January and February
  • After interviews, applicants are ranked by MMI score
  • Offers are made to the top-ranked candidates
  • Reserve list applicants are notified

June- September

  • Offer holders receive information about accommodation, finance and registration
  • A Level results released in August
  • Offers updated based on results
  • Final joining instructions sent ahead of the September start
