Mandarin Language classes
Introduction
Classes are held in-person at Lancaster University and online.
Language courses are repeated three times per year, alongside each term:
- Michaelmas Term (October - December),
- Lent Term (January - March),
- Summer Term (April - June).
Exact schedules for each class and registration will be available a few weeks prior to the start of each new term.
Language course cost:
- For Lancaster University students - £40 per term
- For others - £50 per term

Textbooks
Please find below information regarding the textbooks that will be used during the Summer term:
- Beginner Level 1 to Beginner Level 5 classes will use Discover China Student's Book 1.
- Intermediate Level 1 to Intermediate Level 5 classes will use Discover China Student's Book 2.
- Upper-Intermediate Level 1 class will use Discover China Student Book 3.
- Advanced 1 class will use New Practical Chinese Reader Book 3.
We strongly recommend that everyone attends the class with a copy of the textbook. Please ask our team if you are not sure which level you will need.
The textbooks may be available to borrow from our Resource Centre (The Roundhouse, Room A02) or the Lancaster University Library.

Beginner Level 1
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
For beginners with no prior knowledge. Learners will learn basic phonetics and tones and use about 200 words around the following topics: greetings, countries, nationalities, occupations and family members.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class and learning characters.
Textbook: Discover China Student Book 1 (red), units 1-3
When: Tuesday afternoons, 12.15-1.45pm (in-person) OR Monday evenings, 6.15-7.45pm (online)

Beginner Level 2
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
For those who have learned around 200 Chinese words. Participants will learn a further 200 words around various topics (people's appearances, addresses, contact numbers, birthdays and invitations).
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class and learning characters.
Textbook: Discover China Student Book 1 (red), units 4-6

Beginner Level 3
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
For those who have learned around 400 Chinese words. Participants will learn a further 200 words on the topics of time, appointments, shopping, locations and advertisements. Learners will also learn how to read and recognize more ‘survival’ Chinese characters, and will progress their knowledge of Chinese grammar.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class and learning characters.

Beginner Level 4
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This course will cover the topics of transportation, sports, likes and dislikes and holiday plans.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class and learning characters.
Textbook: Discover China. Student's Book One, units 10-12

Beginner level 5 Review and Chinese character class
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This class will review Discover China book 1 and focus on Chinese characters to prepare learners for Discover China book 2.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Intermediate Level 1
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This course will cover the topics of daily routines, weather, seasons and clothes, home visits and Chinese New Year.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Intermediate Level 2
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This course will cover the topics of transport, directions, hotel accommodation, museums, history and cultural relics.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Intermediate Level 3
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This course will cover the topics of eating out, food and drink, shopping for souvenirs, posting a parcel and sightseeing.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Intermediate Level 4
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
The course will cover the topics of people's appearance, sportswear, seeing the doctor, illness, healthy lifestyles, friends and personal characteristics.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Intermediate level 5 Review (online)
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.

Upper-Intermediate Level 1 (online)
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This course is for learners with a good knowledge of Chinese language and characters.
The course will cover the topics of college courses and requirements; books, libraries and book reviews and assignments, quizzes and deadlines.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

Advanced Course (online)
A 10 week Mandarin Chinese language course for students, staff and general public from week 15 January to week beginning 18 March 2024.
This is an advanced level course. The course will start at the beginning of the textbook New Practical Chinese Reader book 3.
To make progress during the course you will need to allocate at least 3 hours per week for revision of each class.

1 to 1 classes
If you are interested in a more personal session, we can also offer tailored 1:1 sessions on a more flexible basis. 1:1 classes on campus are usually £40 per hour. Classes taught off campus, or teaching to a small group may be charged differently.
