Centre Director

Pentland Centre Director Professor Jan Bebbington focuses on issues that emerge for organisations as they seek to address sustainable development concerns. Training as a chartered accountant has led Jan to be especially interested in how business provides accounts of its activities, ambitions and achievements as well as how they make decisions (using appropriate data) that will enhance corporate stewardship. Over time Jan’s work has become more inter-disciplinary in nature because understanding what needs to be contributed by corporations requires a clear understanding of policy frameworks (such as the Sustainable Development Goals) and the issues to be addressed (such as climate and ecological science).

Alongside her academic work, Jan has also made substantive contributions to the practice and policy communities in a variety of roles including, for example, being the Vice Chair (Scotland) of the Sustainable Development Commission from 2006 to 2011. The role of the Commission (a part of the UK Government) was to promote sustainable development across the UK and all sectors of society, particularly within Government. A more recent practice engagement is her membership (2013-2023) of Scottish and Southern Energy’s Sustainable Development Fund panel, which supported community projects across regions in Scotland where SSE has renewable generation assets. In 2018 the Royal Scottish Geographical Society awarded Jan an Honorary Fellowship. In 2025 she received an honorary doctorate from Tampere University in Finland.
