How to Apply

If you apply for a place on one of our Masters programmes, we are here to help you through the process as quickly and as straightforwardly as possible.

As a general guide, to be eligible for our taught Masters degrees you require a relevant first degree (normally 2:1 or equivalent). We also consider applicants with a 2:2 (or equivalent) as long as you have relevant paid or voluntary work experience. We have had many students in the past who were changing careers or taking a new direction in life. If you consider that you have a non-standard background and would like advice on your eligibility for our programmes, please get in touch with the Graduate School Office.

If English is not your first language you will also require a recognised English language qualification, such as:

  • IELTS: 6.5 (with at least 6 in each section)
  • TOEFL iBT: 93 (with at least 20 in each section)
  • Pearson PTE: 62 (with 51 in each communication skill)
  • Cambridge English Proficiency: Grade C

Making your application

If you would like to apply for one of our Masters degrees, you need to use the University’s online My Applications website. You will need the following documentation to support your application:

  • Your degree transcripts and certificates, including certified English translations (if applicable)
  • Two references
  • Copies of any English language test results (if English is not your first language)
  • A personal statement to help us understand why you wish to study your chosen degree

If you are a current Lancaster University student, you will not need to provide your Lancaster degree transcript and only need to provide one reference.

When to apply

You can apply at any time of the year for our taught Masters degrees. However, if you wish to be considered for funding, are applying from overseas or require on-campus accommodation, we recommend you to apply as early as possible and ideally before April.


If you accept a place on the programme, you will be asked to pay a deposit of £250 to secure your place. This deposit is then deducted from your tuition fees which you pay when you start the programme. The deposit is not normally refundable if you change your mind about coming to Lancaster, but it is refundable if you do not meet any conditions attached to the offer, provided that you have made a reasonable attempt to meet any conditions. In the event of a refund, you will need to provide documentary evidence.
