Dr Chris Jewell Title: Is Lancaster equipped for rapid data research translation? Experiences of SARS-CoV-2 modelling in a hurry!

Modelling the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in the UK since February 2020 has been

an "interesting" experience. How does one go about new statistical

development at the same time as operationalising analyses to run

overnight within the University setting? Do we have the right equipment

and software environment on campus to allow rapid translation of

research into mainstream use? How do we ensure that analysis pipelines

remain agile to new methodological innovations, whilst retaining

robustness against dirty data and hardware failure? In this talk I will

describe the approach my team took in CHICAS to operationalise our

SARS-CoV-2 model, providing daily automatic analysis for SPI-M, the SAGE

modelling sub-committee. In particular, I will highlight perceived gaps

in our translational data research capability at Lancaster, with the aim

of opening a discussion around how we can enable our researchers to more

effectively operationalise their innovations.
