Berry Consultants

An AKT Project to identify optimal clinical trial designs, by developing a simulation optimisation algorithm

The Project

Berry Consultants are leading experts in clinical trial simulation with a global market leading clinical trial simulation software, providing services to enable clients to design clinical trials. Prior to the AKT project, the software configuration exploration was performed manually, rather than with a more systematic method.

AKT Associate, Matthew Darlington worked with the team at Berry Consultants, along with Dr Luke Rhodes-Leader in the Department of Management Science at Lancaster University Management School to deliver the AKT project.

The AKT project’s key aim was to investigate the use of simulation optimisation techniques to find optimal trial designs in a more systematic and efficient manner, enabling the company to offer an additional service to their clients beyond an evaluation tool, allowing them to provide consultancy services and software of higher value to the clients, which, in turn would speed up the clinical trial design process and lead to more favourable patient outcomes.

The Impact

Through the AKT project collaboration, Berry Consultants have accelerated an innovative new system by developing an advanced usable proof of concept and improved processes within the company, along with new IP and revenue stream potential.

As a result of the AKT project, the company has been able to fully document and directly implement the algorithms, enabling them to directly apply to real client cases, as well as being able to adapt to other designs, which were outside the scope of this project and offers potential for further growth.

“The project quickly focussed in on a very productive technique to apply our clinical trial optimisation problem and was able to explore applying that technique in detail and resolve a number of deep technical issues”

Tom Parke, Director of Software Solutions, Berry Consultants LLP

“The AKT project was a great way to bring my research into a genuine business problem. The funding allowed us to really engage with this on a short intensive project, working closely with Berry Consultants, and we were brilliantly supported by Lancaster University’s Enterprise & Innovation Services. It has also generated some interesting idea for future research and collaboration

Dr Luke Rhodes-Leader, Academic Supervisor

"Being part of the AKT project was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with both Berry Consultants and Lancaster University. It was a great experience to explore new academic research areas while also seeing how our work could have real-world impact."

Matthew Darlington, AKT Associate
