The Knowledge Transfer Partnership

A Knowledge Transfer Partnership to improve inventory decision-making

Jaguar Land Rover worked with Lancaster University Management School on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) created to design, test and implement innovative statistical and machine learning models to improve forecasting and inventory control for spare parts. The KTP project helped the company to reduce economic and environmental waste, while maintaining a satisfactory level of customer service.

KTP Associate, Dr Maren Dangut, worked with the team at Jaguar Land Rover and Dr Anna-Lena Sachs, Professor Adam Letchford and the late Professor John Boylan in the Department of Management Science at Lancaster University Management School.

The Project

Jaguar Land Rover offers a comprehensive after-sales service to its customers, aspiring to make spare parts available to vehicle owners for at least ten years after a vehicle has gone out of production. This leads to large-scale and complex forecasting and inventory control problems, with thousands of parts under consideration at any given time.

The KTP helped Jaguar Land Rover leverage cutting-edge statistical and machine learning methods, to produce more accurate forecasts of the long-term demand for spare parts, and then use those forecasts to determine order quantities in their inventory control system. The resulting system is expected to bring several benefits, such as savings in ordering and stockholding costs, reduced environmental waste, and improved customer satisfaction.

The Impact

Jaguar Land Rover

“The KTP has brought about many improvements. We’re now able to rely on data to inform the forecasting of service parts. The improved accuracy of the forecast means we keep the part in stock to maximise sales, but also produce a lower excess of discontinued parts, resulting in less scrapping, waste and transportation. All of these factors contribute to our Destination Zero strategy, aiming to systematically reduce JLR’s Environmental Impact.

“The KTP has acted as a groundbreaking platform, which will have a huge impact on people, process and profitability.”

Academic team

“The KTP has been an interesting and rewarding experience. It has provided us with an excellent opportunity to have a real impact by embedding academic expertise in practice and establishing a long-term collaborative relationship with Jaguar Land Rover. The experience will prove valuable when leading large research projects in the future.

“The KTP has already made a substantial positive impact in terms of teaching on some of our forecasting modules, exemplifying many of the concepts taught in the modules.

We expect that there will be more lessons learned during the coming years as we see the effects of the inventory decisions made using the model, potentially resulting in an impact case study.”

“My KTP experience has been invaluable in enhancing my professional development. It has provided me with hands-on experience in improving my data science skills, Salesforce development, enabling me to acquire practical skills in designing, implementing, and maintaining solutions tailored to business needs.

Additionally, the project exposed me to cross-functional teamwork, client interaction, and project management, refining my communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities.

Overall, my KTP journey has significantly elevated my proficiency as a data scientist and equipped me with transferable skills essential for future career growth.”
