Sport Lancaster supports the Students’ Union’s clubs and societies by providing competition-standard training facilities, routes to funding, and partnering with teams to promote their activities.

Since its inception in 1965, the notorious Roses varsity tournament between Lancaster University and the University of York, is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together student-athletes to compete in a wide range of sports during more than 100 fixtures.

The rivalry between Lancaster and York adds excitement to the tournament, as teams vie for victory and bragging rights in this spirited competition. With a rich history and tradition of excellence, Roses is a highlight of the academic year for both universities and a celebration of the vibrant sporting culture on campus.

Focus Sports

The Students' Union have six 'Focus Sports' that benefit from additional funding for high-level coaching, additional competition, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning.

At achieve this status, the sports teams must strive for excellence, showcasing a strong desire to improve, at a professional level, their performance in their sport but also engaging and actively promoting their team with peers and the local community.

Join a Team

Most student sports teams are eligible for a unique ‘Sport Lancaster+ Club’ membership, which covers BUCS fees, affiliation, competition transport costs, and team access to Sport Lancaster training facilities twice a week.

A small number of student sports teams will compete in BUCS without requiring acess to Sport Lancaster. These teams are often self-funded but are entitled to 50% funding for BUCS competitions. Sport Lancaster Memberships can be purchased by individual team members separately.
