Climbing for kids is a fun way to stay active and promote physical strength, coordination, and problem-solving skills. Sport Lancaster encourages young people to push their limits and build confidence on the Climbing Wall.

Kids' Climbing Courses

Kids' Climbing Courses at Sport Lancaster are delivered in termly blocks. We are proud to deliver National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS®), a nationally-recognised introduction to climbing, providing a gateway to learning more and developing a love for the sport.

Sport Lancaster’s Climbing Camps are aimed at children and young people looking to improve their climbing ability and make new friends over the school holidays.

The Climbing Camps are split into sessions by different age groups, and the tutoring is tailored to the needs and abilities of each participant.

7-9 years:

  • Monday 7 April, 9am-12pm
  • Friday 11 April, 9am-12pm
  • Wednesday 16 April, 9am-12pm

10-13 years:

  • Tuesday 8 April, 9am-12pm
  • Thursday 10 April, 9am-12pm
  • Thursday 17 April, 9am-12pm

14+ years:

  • Wednesday 9 April, 9am-12pm
  • Tuesday 15 April, 9am-12pm

Ticket Price: £30 (£50 for two siblings)

Please contact our Climbing Team at climbing@lancaster.ac.uk to enquire about siblings who slightly span over two age groups but would prefer to join a session together. Please note, this isn't always guaranteed.

Tab Content: NICAS (7-9 years)

The 7-9 year old sessions are the first age group eligible to take part in the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS®). Young people will be introduced to climbing and develop a love for the sport.

The key aim is to provide a safe introduction to climbing for anyone aged 7+ years on artificial climbing structures (e.g. indoor climbing walls).

The nationally-recognised scheme helps to standardise the teaching and coaching of climbing in a structured manner, whilst providing lots of fun too.

How to book

Enrolment opens for the 13-week Summer Term on Monday 14 April 2025.

Summer Term commences on Tuesday 22 April 2025, with a break for May Half Term (Monday 26 May - Sunday 1 June)

13-week tuition: £110.50*

Upon enrolment, participants should choose one day of the week which suits them:

  • Monday, 5.30pm - 6.30pm (with the exception of Bank Holiday Monday 21 April)
  • Tuesday, 4pm - 5pm
  • Wednesday, 4pm - 5pm
  • Thursday, 4pm - 5pm
  • Saturday, 9am - 10pm
  • Saturday, 1pm - 2pm (NEW)
  • Sunday, 9.30am - 10.30am

NICAS Autumn Term

These sessions are suitable for young people aged 10-13 who have progressed through to the higher levels of the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS®).

Participants will learn more about the history, ethics and styles of both indoor and outdoor climbing.

The nationally-recognised scheme helps to standardise the teaching and coaching of climbing in a structured manner, whilst providing lots of fun too.

How to book

Enrolment opens for the 13-week Summer Term on Monday 14 April 2025.

Summer Term commences on Tuesday 22 April 2025, with a break for May Half Term (Monday 26 May - Sunday 1 June)

13-week tuition: £162.50*

Upon enrolment, participants should choose one day of the week which suits them.

NICAS Autumn Term

Also known at Sport Lancaster as Young Climbers Club, this session is available to young people from the age of 14 who have progressed from earlier NICAS levels.

The nationally recognised scheme helps to standardise the teaching and coaching of climbing in a structured manner whilst providing lots of fun too.

Young people from 14 years old are also eligible to take their Competency Assessment at Sport Lancaster and register to use the Climbing Wall unsupervised, without the structure of the NICAS qualification.

NICAS Autumn Term

Tab Content: Family Climb

A fun session for families looking to explore the sport and spend quality time together on the wall. The session consists of learning basic skills such as fitting a harness, tying a figure of eight knot, belaying, bouldering, and top roping.

  • £9.35 per person for a 1-hour session
  • No experience needed

  • Instructed session for up to 6 climbers

Kids' Climbing Parties

Book a fun-filled party for your child, including games, bouldering, rope climbing and more.

  • £100 for a 1.5-hour party
  • Climb the 8.5m wall
  • Bouldering games in a crocodile-infested cave
  • All equipment provided
  • 6-8 years with a 1:6 adult:child ratio
  • 9+ years with a 1:9 adult:child ratio
