Dr James Fraser

I am interested in the social and agro-ecological dimensions of small-scale farming and natural resource management in the Global South.

Combining social and natural science methods, my research focuses on relationships between local peoples and Anthropogenic Dark Earths (ADE) in tropical forest landscapes of Liberia (West Africa) and Brazilian Amazonia.

My post-doctoral research in Liberia revealed the existence and on-going formation of African ADE, hitherto overlooked and significant as a model for sustainable agriculture (publications forthcoming).

My doctoral research demonstrated that Amazonian ADE permit high-yielding semi-permanent production of manioc, one of the most important crops in tropical agriculture.
