My research focuses on (1) transport of volcanic ash in the atmosphere and (2) the interaction between volcanoes and glaciers.  With respect to (1), I am interested in mechanisms of particle aggregation, the causes of volcanic plume-induced electric fields, and the impact of volcanic plumes on aviation.  I couple field observations with laboratory experiments to advance understanding in this area.  My work on (2) involves deriving information on past climates via geologic mapping, geochemical analysis and interpretation of data from volcanoes, mainly in Chile and Iceland, that are either currently ice-capped or have been in the last few hundred thousand years.
