Professor Philip Barker


My research in palaeolimnology and palaeoclimatology contributes to the global change debate. This research aims to give a long term perspective from which to understand climate change and biogeochemical feedbacks. I also want to develop new proxies to achieve these goals. The most exciting recent work is in the development of isotope methods from freshwater diatom silica as palaeoclimatic and environmental tracers. All of these methods can be employed worldwide and I have a particular interest in tropical regions, notably Africa. In the UK, my work has focussed largely on biomonitoring using diatoms and stable isotopes to better understand diffuse pollution in lakes and rivers.
