Orienteering on Campus

Campus Orienteering artwork

Welcome to the Lancaster University Virtual Orienteering Course, a fun way to explore campus.

To take part you first need a copy of the map which is available from the Sports Centre reception desk.

It is possible just to use the map on your phone, which will show when you click to go to start, but a paper map is much more usable. You can find an explanation of the symbols attached to the printed map. You also need to install the “Maprun6” app on your Apple or Android phone. If you need guidance on using the app then see https://maprunners.weebly.com/

When you are ready to start just scan the QR code on the map and it will download the files you need to use the app.

Now click “Go To Start” and head off to the nearest control to you. Controls are shown with red circles and there is a description to tell you what you are looking for on the map. When you get close to the control your phone should ‘beep’ to confirm you have found it. This relies on the GPS feature of your phone so it is not 100% accurate. It may register before you get to the centre of the circle or you may need to wander around a bit before it registers.

Now you can try to find as many controls as you like. The only rule is that you need to return to the same control as you started from to end your trip. You can look for as many or as few controls as you like and go out as many times as you like.

Your result will be automatically uploaded to the Maprun website and you can see how other people have got on.

If you want to try something a little more adventurous visit the Red Rose Orienteers (the local club) website www.sroc.org.
