Event Details

Join The Ruskin and textile designer and hand-weaver Dalia James for an introduction to contemporary hand weaving. The workshop takes place in the inspiring setting of Lancaster Castle.

Everything you need, including a tapestry loom, tools and materials hand-made and selected by Dalia, will be provided. You will take home a hand-woven textile. The workshop will include setting up a small tapestry loom and experimenting with different weaving techniques, and give you ideas for preparing your finished piece for display.

Dalia James is a London based woven textile designer and hand-weaver. As a handweaver, the connection between her and the cloth she creates is essential. Dalia’s work is an extension of that and focuses on colour and geometry, and explores the relationship between the two. Her design philosophy has been shaped by the writing of William Morris and Josef Albers and her work often references early 20th Century design and artistic movements. In 2019, Dalia was selected for the Crafts Council’s emerging makers programme ‘Hothouse’ and in 2020 was awarded a grant by Arts Council England to further develop her creative practice.

In 2020, The Ruskin announced a textile commission with Dalia, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. Dalia’s piece responds to the lines, colours and textures of Richard MacCormac's iconic architectural design for The Ruskin.

This is part of The Ruskin’s Spring programme of workshops at the Castle. Learn from contemporary artists and makers and get to know the Ruskin Whitehouse Collection, in a creative and sociable environment. All workshops are suitable for beginners (16+).
