My MSc by Research in Limestone Pavements
Posted on

I started my MSc by Research in January 2025 with a plan to study the bryophytes found in limestone pavements. I had found an interest in bryophytes during my undergrad and was lucky to be provided with another opportunity to study them for my Masters in a habitat I had not explored botanically.
The aim of the project is to recreate a small study conducted by the British Ecological Society in 1954 that showed the zonation of bryophytes in the grikes of limestone pavements. This study was conducted in the wooded grikes of Colt Park Wood in Yorkshire, but I will be conducting my research across a number of both wooded and open pavements in Northern England.
Fieldwork is now fully underway and luckily the typical northern summer has provided good conditions for recording bryophytes. It has been great to be able to dedicate so much time to improving my ID skills and knowledge and I have found plenty of new species to me. I have been fortunate that my family have kindly volunteered to be scribes which has made the process much easier and I’m sure they have been enjoying learning some of the strange names of species.
