Summary:

In a rapidly changing world, scientists increasingly face challenges of how to ensure the effective and efficient uptake of science into conservation, management, and policy. We will share examples from the Bertarelli Foundation’s Indian Ocean marine science programme, ranging from the insights gained from enabling collaborations across scientific disciplines, to addressing regional inequities in marine science, and testing different approaches to science communication. We will share two case studies of how research has driven conservation action in the Chagos Archipelago, ending with how we have approached science diplomacy as this large-scale marine protected area goes through sovereignty change.

Bios:

Heather leads the Bertarelli Foundation’s Indian Ocean Marine Science programme at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Rachel is the Programme Manager. They have over 60 years of combined experience working at ZSL (!).
