This presentation aims to generate discussions around what decolonising science means, why decolonising ecology is important, and what international journals can do to support this decolonisation process.
This seminar is based on a recent Journal of Applied Ecology editorial by Dr Nathalie Pettorelli (Zoological Society of London) and colleagues, which can be found here: https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2664.13815. The chair for the session is co-author of the editorial Professor Jos Barlow (Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University).
The objective of this presentation will not be to provide a comprehensive overview of the causes of Humanity’s colonial past or its consequences for the practice of science; rather, it will focus on providing relevant background information to support the recent decisions made by Journal of Applied Ecology's senior editorial team about the way the journal operates. Attendees will be invited to share their feedback on these changes and discuss potentially overlooked actions.
Dr Nathalie Pettorelli and Prof Jos Barlow are Senior Editors of the Journal of Applied Ecology (@JAppliedEcology) and are both active on Twitter: @Pettorelli and @JosBarlow respectively.
