Food and the City

It is acknowledged that in order to mend our broken global food system society needs to reconnect with food. This has multiple benefits for community cohesion, physical and mental wellbeing, access to food and benefits for the environment. Around the country, and across the globe, community initiatives have taken the lead in establishing innovative approaches to food in their locality… from setting up community growing projects, establishing sustainable procurement practices and tackling food waste.

As the UK looks to develop the first National Food Strategy for 75 years this event will discuss the potential for national and local food policies to transform our food system. It will be a celebration of our local food partnership (North Lancashire Food Futures) in being recognised as a Bronze Sustainable Food City but importantly it is also a platform to explore the future direction of the partnership. How can all stakeholders, from Lancaster University to the council to community groups, help shape and support a vibrant food partnership in North Lancashire?Talks from Mike Berners-Lee (Author of 'There is no Planet B'), Rebecca Laughton (The Landworkers’ Alliance/A People’s Food Policy) and Anna Clayton (North Lancashire Food Futures) will explore how we can tackle our many ‘crises’ (ecological, health and economic) through food. A drinks reception will take place following the seminar for further discussion (approx. 17:30)
