Every Tuesday 9.30 – 10.30am, we invite a Lancaster academic to brief us on their research. The format is a 20 minute talk followed by discussion.
Space wizards, droids and blasters vs slicers and hackers: The old gods vs the new.
Dr Andrew Tate and Dr Daniel PrinceIn the most recent film from the latest Star Wars trilogy a sliver, or hacker, featured as a prominent mechanism by which the hero’s of the story bypass the defenses of the villains. This represents a continued trend in modern story telling in which the man made is controlled and manipulated in ways that were not indebted, in much the same way as in past where the wizard or sorcerer would work with the natural world. This talk will explore the role of the hacker in modern stories. First through looking at the practical realities vs their story telling perception. Then subsequently through a critical analysis of the role and the context they work in.
