Dr Camille Mellin (Australian Institute of Marine Science & University of Adelaide, Australia) discusses the effect of environmental and human drivers on the resistance and recovery potential of hard corals within the Great Barrier Reef.

Coral reefs are declining globally due to cumulative impacts of human and natural disturbances. Here we quantify the effect of environmental and human drivers on the resistance and recovery potential of hard corals within the Great Barrier Reef. We then use these results to develop a high-resolution dynamic model of coral cover that directly incorporates the cumulative effects of coral bleaching, disease, starfish outbreaks, and tropical cyclones.
