It has often been catastrophes within the nuclear industry (such as those at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl or Fukushima) which have fuelled the development of bespoke robotic systems which are sometimes later adopted in the industry in general.
These disaster zones represent extreme environments where the hazard has become unpredictable and dangerous and thus human entry is perhaps not a viable option. Within any such environment, entry and mitigation is always going to be a dangerous activity due to potential hazards such as the unexpected collapse of the structure or disposal of substances such as asbestos. When you factor in high levels of radiation within the building, it is clear why sending in robots into these environments may be a popular solution. Here we discuss the robot solutions which have been utilised within nuclear disaster environments over the years.
