Blog: whose green? Chololo Ecovillage and ‘the secret formula of development’

Margherita Lala spent ten months living in Chololo Ecovillage in Tanzania exploring how this acclaimed experiment in climate adaptation is working for the people who live there.

‘Chololo Ecovillage’ was a 32-month EU funded project on climate adaptation and mitigation between 2011 and 2014. It tested ecological technologies and other ‘innovations’ in water, energy, agriculture, livestock and forestry including ‘improved’ seeds, ‘improved’ livestock, and ‘improved’ stoves. It has been presented as a model of good practice for adaptation and mitigation to climate change, particularly in East Africa. Margherita wanted to know how it was working a few years on. She tells in her blog post of her experience making her home among the villagers while investigating questions she summarises as: "whose 'green' is the ecovillage and its technological innovations?"
