What climate change impacts could we see if global warming exceeds 1.5°C? And even if we do limit warming to low levels, what further changes are already ‘baked in’? This seminar explains how much global temperatures could rise as a result of current policies, and explores some of the potential consequences such as sea level rise, flooding, and heat stress.
Prof Richard Betts is Chair in Climate Impacts at the University of Exeter and Head of Climate Impacts in the Met Office Hadley Centre, appointed MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List June 2019 for his ‘services to understanding climate change’. Richard’s work has included cutting-edge research on climate change and advising governments as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and public engagement such as appearances on the BBC, ITV and at Glastonbury Festival 2017 and 2019. He regularly discusses climate science on Twitter (@richardabetts).
