Congratulations to the 140 students from the Lancaster Environment Centre graduating this week.

This year 58 students are graduating with a 1st, 30% of the cohort, well above the national average, reflecting Lancaster’s position as a top ten university: 86% of students are being awarded a 1st or 2:1, considered ‘good’ degrees’.

Professor Phil Barker, Lancaster Environment Centre director, said:

“We are very proud of our new graduates for what they have achieved as students and also for what they might become. We hope their fantastic achievements here at Lancaster provide a springboard to still greater things in the future that brings benefit to themselves, society and our environment.

Lancaster Environment Centre Prize (sponsored by the Enterprise and Business Partnerships (EBP) team:

For the best overall performance by a fourth year LEC MSci or MArts student.

Jonathan Roberts, MSci Hons Biology (19.3 overall, 20.1 year 4 mean)

Lancaster Environment Centre Innovation Prize (sponsored by the EBP team):

For the best performance by a LEC undergraduate student in engaging with Enterprise and Business Partnership activities.

Emily Howes, BSc Hons Physical Geography (Best LEC.301 performance)

For the Year 3 undergraduate reading for a BSc/MSci degree in Biology Environmental Biology or Ecology and Conservation who has displayed the most diligence, enthusiasm and good progress in general.

Andrew Malloch Memorial Prize:

For the Year 3 undergraduate reading for a BSc/MSci degree in Biology, Environmental Biology or Ecology and Conservation who has demonstrated the greatest enthusiasm and skill in field ecology.

Justine Patton, BSc Hons Ecology and Conservation

Gordon Manley Prize:

For the best contribution by dissertation (LEC.300/301/499) or otherwise to the enhancement of knowledge of the evolution of any part of the physical or atmospheric environment of NW England between the Mersey and the Solway.

Ceri Allgood, MSci Earth and Environmental Science

Sandra Irish Memorial Prize:

For overall contribution to the department (e.g. Staff Student Committee, UCAS Visit Days, etc.) by a final year undergraduate student. This is not a prize for academic merit, but for ‘helpfulness and positive spirit’.

Ben Teague, BA Hons Geography

British Society of Soil Science Prize:

For the best all round performance in LEC.278 Soil Science. Criteria 1) enthusiasm for the discipline of Soil Science, 2) demonstrated academic excellence in Soil Science, 3) demonstrated connected thinking about Soil Science, 4) communication of Soil Science.
