A feast of food and thought

2050 Food Week, Lancaster Environment Centre, showing bowls of food

From 29 October to 2 November, Lancaster Environment Centre’s Sustainability Group is hosting a week of lunchtime activities aimed at sparking debate and generating action across campus and beyond on issues relating to food sustainability.

Dr Jess Davies, from the Sustainability Group, said: “Our current food system accounts for 30% of our greenhouse gas emissions and is a major contributor to land use change and degradation, water pollution and biodiversity loss.

“This series of lunchtime events will explore what changes we will need to make to our diets, habits, and packaging before 2050 to meet our carbon commitments for mitigating climate change and other sustainability challenges.”

Staff, students, alumni and the public are all welcome. It’s a chance to:

  • Drink coffee and debate whether plastics are fantastic or drastic for sustainability at a Pop up Plastics cafe
  • Become a food pledge maker - learn about the environmental impact of your own and the University’s food choices, and make a pledge about what you want to change - as part of the day long Lancaster Autumn Food Festival
  • Hear about all the fascinating research being done across the University to improve food production and distribution at the N8 Agri-food networking lunch
  • Test your knowledge, and eat yet more good food, at a Sustainable Food Quiz
