A day in the life of an Economics student

I always start my day getting the bus to campus from my accommodation in the city of Lancaster. I live in a flat with friends in the centre of town so it’s super convenient to get to the bus stop for Uni and to get out and do things like shopping, socialising etc. Students at the University can get a student bus pass from Stagecoach, saving a lot of money if you use it often.

Today I don’t have any lectures but do have coursework deadlines at the end of this week, so I will be going onto campus to work on those!

On campus there are lots of great places to study, my personal favourites are the Library, Management School and Pendle’s (my college’s) study space.

Today I am working on my ECON324: Advanced Macroeconomics assignment on the New Keynesian model which requires the software Matlab and Dynare. The university provides access to loads of software we might need so we don’t have to worry about purchasing anything. The work has been really challenging however the lecturer is great at explaining things, really approachable, and it has been so rewarding seeing the assignment take form!

After a few hours of work, I met with friends in the newly refurbished Pendle Brew to take advantage of their great range of veggie meals and coffees and to have a well-earned break.

After lunch I had a walk around campus to de-stress before heading to the Library to continue working on coursework. This picture was taken by the LICA building in north campus - there’s no shortage of green spaces to escape to!

This afternoon I moved on to another piece of coursework, a project for my minor in LEC.380: Climate and Society. Here I am investigating the potential for carbon taxes to mitigate climate change. It is great to be able to tailor module choices and projects to suit my interests, something I might not have been able to do without the flexibility of the minor system on my course.

To end the day, I often go to the gym on campus; they have a great range of high-quality machines/rooms for an affordable price so it’s worth checking out! I often also meet with friends/ a society however tonight will be an early one as I will be continuing with my assignments tomorrow to hopefully get them finished.
