A week in the life of a Lancaster University Management School student
Posted on
As a student at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), I am often asked what a typical week looks like for a LUMS student. While every student’s experience is different, my week is usually a balanced combination of academic learning, career development, daily routines, and personal wellbeing.
Academic and Professional Engagement
As a full-time Master's student, I spend most of my time during the week attending scheduled lectures and seminars. Lectures in school equip me with a strong theoretical foundation, while seminars are more interactive and discussion-based. These sessions allow me to exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from classmates with diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
Beyond the classroom, I actively participate in on-campus careers events like career festivals and workshops organised by the University. Employers directly go to the School, giving students the opportunity to learn about different positions in their company, company's culture, some recruitment programmes such as internship, placement and graduate schemes, and recruitment processes. I also enjoy the networking sessions, where students can have friendly talks directly with the employers, helping me understand what employers are really looking for in candidates or any aspects I want to dive in.
I also joined a one-to-one careers advice session with the University’s Careers Department. That session helped me clarify my career interests and identify job areas that suit my skills and long-term goals.

Independent Study and Career Development
Independent study plays a crucial role in my weekly routine. I regularly spend time in the library or quiet study spaces working on coursework, revising lecture materials, and preparing for assignments. Reviewing content throughout the week helps me stay on track and reduces stress when it comes to deadlines.
Along with my studies, I try to explore career opportunities related to my degree. I actively search for a future job mainly through platforms such as LinkedIn and company websites. That is why I also spend some time updating my CV and application materials as well as practising interview techniques so that I am ready to apply for a job anytime.
Daily Living and Routine
Having a structured routine helps me manage university life effectively. I plan my week carefully around study sessions and deadlines, while also dealing with daily tasks such as laundry, budgeting, and general organisation.
I have become more independent than ever when I study abroad and live on campus by myself. I often cook traditional Vietnamese meals, which not only helps me feel happy when I can eat my favourite dishes but also gives me a sense of home while studying abroad. I go to the town centre by bus every weekend for grocery shopping for the whole next week.

Wellbeing and Balance
Maintaining a healthy balance between academic commitments and personal life is very important to me. During the week, I make sure to schedule regular breaks to avoid burnout. I try to stay active by walking around campus and playing badminton.
In the evenings or on quieter days, I make time for myself doing anything I want, like watching game shows while having meals or simply resting and catching up on sleep to recharge after a busy week. Socialising also plays a big role. I enjoy spending time with my friends through shared meals, casual conversations, and playing board games together in the graduate kitchen or social hub.
As an international student, I also took the opportunity to take short trips to nearby areas. One of my best weekend experiences so far has been visiting the Lake District with my friends, which is a perfect way to relax and enjoy nature.

In short, a week in the life of a LUMS student is not just about studying, it is about developing academically, preparing for a future career, building independence, and maintaining wellbeing. As a Student Ambassador, I believe LUMS provides an environment that supports both academic success and personal growth. I hope this blog gives you a realistic insight into student life at LUMS and helps you imagine yourself studying here.
