Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) is the most research-intensive business school in the UK, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) published 18 December 2014.

LUMS is ranked 1st in the UK for 'research power' – a metric that represents a combination of the quality and quantity of research – and 1st for the number of research-active staff, showing LUMS to be the leading research-intensive business school in the UK.

The REF judged the entire LUMS research environment to be world-leading in terms of vitality and sustainability: 80 % of LUMS research activity was recognised by the REF panel as world-leading or internationally excellent.

LUMS has built a 24-year reputation for research of outstanding quality. The School’s deeply embedded research culture resulted in the inclusion of 144 (75%)* of LUMS staff in the REF assessment, a considerably higher number than any other UK business school. The vitality and sustainability of the School is demonstrated by:

  • the high number – 38 (31%) – of early-career researchers included in the submission
  • an internationally excellent PhD programme – one of the largest in the UK
  • 116 world-leading (4-star) publications submitted

Commenting on the assessment rankings, LUMS Dean, Professor Sue Cox said: “Over the last 20 years we have created a research-intensive and inclusive environment which is why leading academics choose to come to Lancaster.

“Our REF performance underpins the School’s belief in the importance of research-led teaching and the impact of our research on the economy and society.

“I’m really proud of the achievements of our faculty and the exceptional results in REF 2014.”
