Friday 6 March 2026, 10:00am to 11:30am
Event Details
In this SIME session, Lisa Simmons and James Proctor (Manchester Metropolitan University) will outline Two-Stage Exams, a novel assessment approach combining an individual exam with a short collaborative group element.
This evidence-based approach to assessment has been shown to promotes deeper learning, reduces assessment anxiety, and enhances confidence and belonging, whilst maintaining academic rigour and encouraging authentic assessment. Using evidence from a pilot in mathematics and chemistry, they will discuss how Two-Stage Exams were designed, implemented, and their impact on student outcomes. The session offers a practical, scalable example of assessment reform that supports student success while developing collaboration and employability skills.
