For Fascination of Plants Day 2022 we're running our LEC Seminar a little differently! Dr Samuel Taylor and postgraduate researcher Catherine Walsh will share their love of plants in an open public online question and answer session. Submit questions in advance on social media: #LECSeminarFoPD

Senior Research Associate Dr Sam Taylor is a of member Lancaster Environment Centre's Photosynthesis Research Group. He describes himself as an environmental physiologist interested in consequences of leaf carbon and water exchange for plant performance. He is expert in analysis of plant growth, water relations & photosynthesis, and manages the department's LI-COR photosynthesis systems.

Catherine Walsh is a postgraduate research student with the Waitrose Collaborative Training Program. She is a member of the Lancaster Environment Centre's Lundgren Lab, supervised by Dr Marjorie Lundgren and Dr Mike Roberts. Catherine's research aims to optimise the yield and flavour of rocket salad crops. I am specifically examining wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia), as it employs a C2 photosynthesis strategy to recycle carbon dioxide and improve carbon concentration. This type of photosynthesis is still being studied to understand its implications on plant mechanisms. and Catherine hopes the results of her work may be used by growers to maintain production of this highly nutritious crop during the onset of climate change.

Fascination of Plants Day on 18th May is an international celebration of plants and plant science. The aim is "to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals". It launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). Find out more at the Fascination of Plants Day website or by following #FoPD22 on social media.
